Comprehensive Lists and Databases

Hymn Arrangements — This is a large database of hymn arrangements provided by Jeff Lyon and the Harold B. Lee Library at BYU. One great feature is the ability to sort by whether or not the arrangement is free.

Ward Choir Music Online — The Harold B. Lee Library’s Music and Dance Library maintains multiple lists of resources. It is updated frequently and includes Spanish resources in addition to English.

Sally DeFord’s Resource List — This is an extensive list of websites covering topics relevant to all music callings. The sites are not arranged by category.

SingPraises.net — A huge undertaking and a wonderful resource, SingPraises.net has all the information you could ever want about the hymns in all editions of LDS publications (many languages are represented).

How to Conduct Video Series — Michelle Willis has created a series of ten video lessons to teach and demonstrate conducting technique.

Books

Manual-only Hymns — This free PDF book makes it possible for a person with modest keyboard skills to quickly become proficient in hymn accompaniment. Includes simplified hymn arrangements with fingering.

Organ Transformations — The purpose of Transformations is to provide musical material, which, when added to the three-voice
hymns from Manual-only Hymns (above), can convert them into simple, musically satisfying preludes or postludes. (Free)

Courses

New LDS Organist — Created by BYU organ professor Don Cook and others, this free course of twelve lessons is designed to help LDS pianists adapt their skills to the organ as soon as possible.

Organ Performance Level 1 (Music 071) — This is the free, online version of BYU’s independent study course. Also available for college credit or a certificate (for a fee).

Organ Performance Level 2 (Music 072) — A continuation of BYU’s free, online independent study course. Also available for college credit or a certificate (for a fee).

Introduction to Music Theory — (available for free from EdX or as part of a paid certificate program from Coursera) — This is a wonderful introduction to scales, chords, and other music theory basics. The teacher is engaging and thorough. It was originally intended for singer/songwriter/popular musicians who were proficient performers but lacked theory training.
