Gabriel Fauré

As part of our Charlotte Mason homeschool, we study a handful of composers each year. I have compiled a list of some of the easier works by Fauré that can be learned by those of you who may be studying him this year.

Top Picks

Sicilienne, arranged for intermediate piano by Jennifer Eklund – This is one of Fauré’s most well-known works. A sample of the music as well as a recording are available on the publisher’s website. The music is available as a digital download. For less than $3.00, this is bargain!

Dolly Suite, Op. 56 – This piece is a piano duet. It’s a wonderful choice for younger piano students because many sections of the piece are very accessible for an intermediate student. In some movements, the upper (primo or prima) parts can be played by a motivated younger student. The lower (secondo or seconda) part should be played by a teacher, parent, or advanced sibling.

Sample of the first movement
  • Movement 1, Berceuse – This movement starts out with a section that is quite simple. The key signature is the only real challenge. The middle section becomes more difficult, but then returns again to the simple lines of the beginning. Give it a try! Especially if you have listened to it multiple times already.
  • The remaining movements are a bit more difficult, but still within reach of the motivated student. Consult with your piano teacher to see which movements are best for your child.

Additional Ideas

These pieces are more difficult. Consult with your piano teacher on which would be best for your child.

  • Romances sans paroles, Op. 17, No. 1 or 3
  • Nocturne, Op. 36, No. 4
  • Barcarolle, Op. 70, No. 6
  • Pièces brèves, Op. 84
  • Preludes, Op. 103, No. 1, 3, or 8

Fauré’s music is available for free from Once you find the piece you are looking for, click through to print the music. It will ask you to wait 15 seconds before you can see the music. Be patient. It’s not a scam or a virus. If you’d rather purchase a bound copy (which can be very handy for duets), Amazon or Sheet Music Plus are good options. Enjoy!
